Spoil Five (2 player card game)

“Spoil Five,” also known as “Five Up,” is a trick-taking card game typically played by three or more players, but it can be adapted for two players with some modifications. Here’s how to play:

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck. Remove the Jokers.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face-down in the center to form the stockpile.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1 starts the game by leading a card from their hand. They can choose any card to play.
  2. Player 2 must then follow suit if possible. If they don’t have a card of the same suit, they can play any card from their hand.
  3. The player who plays the highest card of the leading suit wins the trick and leads the next one.
  4. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card from their hand.
  5. After all cards have been played, players count the number of tricks they have won.

Scoring:

  • The goal of Spoil Five is to win the majority of the tricks, typically 3 or more out of 5.
  • Players earn points based on the number of tricks they win. Each trick won is worth one point.
  • Additionally, there is a bonus point called the “spoilt trick.” The player who wins the last trick (the fifth trick) earns one extra point.
  • If a player wins all five tricks, they earn an additional bonus point.

Adaptation for 2 Players:

  • In the two-player version, the game becomes more about strategy and predicting your opponent’s moves.
  • Each player takes turns leading tricks, with Player 1 starting the first trick and alternating turns thereafter.
  • Since there are only two players, the game may be played to a higher point threshold, such as 7 or 10 points, to accommodate the reduced number of tricks.
  • The rules for following suit and winning tricks remain the same as in the standard game.

Summary: In this adapted version of Spoil Five, customized for a 2-player setting, players compete to win tricks and earn points. By adjusting the gameplay and scoring system, Spoil Five becomes an engaging 2 player card game of strategy and skill, despite its usual design for more players.
