Spit (2 player card game)

“Spit,” also known as “Speed,” is a fast-paced and competitive card game usually played with two players, but it can be adapted for two players with some modifications. Here’s how to play:

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
  2. Deal the entire deck evenly between the two players, so each player has a stack of 26 cards face-down in front of them.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1 starts the game by flipping the top card from their stack face-up into the center of the playing area. This card becomes the first card of their spit pile.
  2. Player 2 does the same, flipping the top card from their stack face-up beside Player 1’s spit pile.
  3. Both players then simultaneously flip the next card from their stack face-up onto the spit pile in the center.
  4. The game proceeds with players taking turns playing cards onto the spit pile as quickly as possible.
  5. Players can play cards onto the spit pile if they are one rank higher or one rank lower than the top card of the pile. For example, if the top card is a 5, players can play a 4 or a 6.
  6. If both players are unable to play any cards from their hand onto the spit pile, they simultaneously say “Spit!” and each player simultaneously deals a new row of cards from their stack, placing them face-up beside their existing spit pile.
  7. Players continue flipping cards and trying to play them onto the spit pile until one player successfully empties their stack of cards.

Scoring:

  • The player who empties their stack first is declared the winner of the round.
  • Each round won earns the winning player one point.
  • The game can be played to a predetermined number of points, such as 10 or 20, with the first player to reach that number declared the overall winner.

Adaptation for 2 Players:

  • In the two-player version, each player has their own spit pile and stack of cards, and they race to play their cards onto the spit pile as quickly as possible.
  • Players must maintain their own pace and focus on their own spit pile, as there is no interaction between the players’ spit piles.
  • The game proceeds with players taking turns flipping cards and playing them onto their spit piles until one player empties their stack.

Summary: In this adapted version of Spit, tailored for a 2-player setting, players race against each other to empty their stacks of cards by quickly playing them onto their spit piles. By focusing on individual speed and agility, Spit becomes an intense and competitive 2 player card game of rapid card play and strategy.
