Sixty-six (2 player card game)

“Sixty-six” is a popular trick-taking card game usually played with multiple players, but it can be adapted for two players with some modifications. Here’s how to play:

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 24-card deck, removing all cards except for 9s through Aces in each suit.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal six cards to each player.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1 starts the game by drawing a card from the deck and adding it to their hand.
  2. Player 1 then plays a card face-up to the center of the table, starting a trick.
  3. Player 2 must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they can play any card from their hand.
  4. The player who plays the highest card of the leading suit wins the trick and leads the next one.
  5. The game continues with players taking turns leading tricks until all cards have been played.
  6. If at any point during the game, a player reaches 66 points or more, they can declare “66” and immediately win the game.

Scoring:

  • Players earn points based on the cards they win in tricks. The points are as follows:
    • Aces are worth 11 points.
    • Tens are worth 10 points.
    • Kings are worth 4 points.
    • Queens are worth 3 points.
    • Jacks are worth 2 points.
  • The player who wins the last trick also earns 1 point.

Winning the Game:

  • The first player to reach 66 points or more can declare “66” and win the game immediately. If neither player reaches 66 points by the end of the game, the player with the highest score wins.

Summary: In this adapted version of Sixty-six, optimized for a 2-player setting, players take turns leading tricks and collecting points. By simplifying the gameplay and focusing on trick-taking and point accumulation, Sixty-six becomes an engaging 2 player card game of strategy and skill.
