Sedma (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of the card game “Sedma” is to be the first player to score a predetermined number of points, typically 100, by winning tricks and capturing specific cards.

Adaptation for 2 Players: “Sedma” is traditionally played with multiple players, but it can be adapted for 2 players. In the adapted version, players still aim to score points by winning tricks, but adjustments are made to accommodate only two players.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 32-card deck, removing all cards below 7 in each suit.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and determine a dealer.
  3. The dealer deals 4 cards to each player, one at a time, starting with the opponent.

Scoring:

  • Points are earned by capturing specific cards during tricks. Each card has a designated point value:
    • Aces: 1 point each
    • Tens: 10 points each
    • Kings: 0 points
  • The first player to reach or exceed the predetermined point threshold (usually 100) wins the game.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn:
    • Player 1 leads by playing a card from their hand face-up on the table.
    • Player 2 then plays a card face-up.
    • The suit of the first card played in a trick determines the suit for that trick.
    • If Player 2 has a card of the same suit, they must play it. Otherwise, they can play any card.
    • The player who played the higher-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick and leads to the next trick.
  2. Player 2’s Turn:
    • Player 2 leads the next trick by playing a card.
    • Player 1 follows with a card, and the winner of the trick leads to the next one.
    • Players continue to take turns playing cards until all 4 tricks are played.

Differentiating Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts each trick by playing a card from their hand, and they lead the next trick after winning a trick.
  • Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 follows Player 1’s lead by playing a card in response to Player 1’s card, and they lead the next trick after winning a trick.

Summary: “Sedma” has been adapted into an engaging 2 player card game where the objective is to be the first to score a predetermined number of points, typically 100, by capturing specific cards during tricks. Although it is traditionally played with more players, the rules have been adjusted to create an enjoyable and strategic experience for two players. Adapted for 2 players, “Sedma” offers exciting trick-taking gameplay and opportunities for tactical play, making it a delightful choice for a two-player card game session.
