Scrub (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of the card game “Scrub” is to be the first player to get rid of all the cards in your hand.

Adaptation for 2 Players: “Scrub” is typically played with more players, but it can be adapted for 2 players. In the adapted version, players still aim to be the first to get rid of all their cards, but adjustments are made to accommodate only two players.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and determine a dealer.
  3. The dealer deals an equal number of cards to each player, face-down. Any remaining cards form a draw pile placed at the center of the table, face-down.
  4. Players do not look at their cards until the game begins.

Scoring:

  • The game typically consists of multiple rounds.
  • At the end of each round, the player who has no cards left in their hand earns 0 points.
  • The other player earns points equal to the total face value of the cards remaining in their hand.
  • The game continues until one player reaches a predetermined score limit, and the player with the lowest score wins.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn:
    • Player 1 starts the game by either playing a card from their hand or drawing a card from the draw pile.
    • If Player 1 has a playable card, they can place it face-up on the discard pile. The card must match either the suit or rank of the top card on the discard pile.
    • If Player 1 cannot play a card, they must draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is playable, Player 1 can immediately play it. Otherwise, their turn ends.
  2. Player 2’s Turn:
    • Player 2 follows the same process as Player 1, either playing a card from their hand or drawing from the draw pile.
    • The game continues with players taking turns to play or draw cards until one player empties their hand.

Differentiating Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game and takes the first turn, choosing whether to play a card from their hand or draw from the draw pile.
  • Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 follows Player 1’s lead, taking their turn by either playing a card from their hand or drawing from the draw pile.

Summary: “Scrub” has been adapted into an engaging 2 player card game where the objective is to be the first to get rid of all the cards in your hand. Although it is typically played with more players, the rules have been adjusted to suit a 2 player format, ensuring an enjoyable and competitive experience. Adapted for 2 players, “Scrub” offers strategic gameplay and exciting card interactions, making it a fantastic choice for a two-player card game session.
