Pushpin (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of the card game “Pushpin” is to be the first player to play all of their cards onto the discard pile.

Adaptation for 2 Players: “Pushpin” is traditionally played with multiple players, but it can be adapted for 2 players. Each player will be dealt a hand of cards, and they will take turns playing cards onto a central discard pile.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and determine who will start as player 1 and player 2.
  3. Deal an equal number of cards to each player to form their starting hands.
  4. Place the remaining deck face-down in the center of the table as the draw pile.
  5. Flip the top card of the draw pile face-up next to it to start the discard pile.

Scoring: Scoring in “Pushpin” is not typically used in casual play. The game is won by the player who successfully plays all of their cards onto the discard pile first.

Gameplay:

  1. Starting Player:
    • Player 1 begins the game.
  2. Playing Cards:
    • Players take turns playing cards onto the discard pile following these rules:
      • Cards can be played if they are the same rank or one rank higher or lower than the top card of the discard pile.
      • Aces are considered low, so they can be played after a King or before a 2.
      • Players can play multiple cards of the same rank in a single turn.
      • If a player cannot play any cards, they must draw cards from the draw pile until they can play.
  3. Drawing Cards:
    • If a player cannot play any cards from their hand, they must draw cards from the draw pile until they can play.
    • If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile (except for the top card) to form a new draw pile.
  4. End of Turn:
    • The turn ends after a player successfully plays cards onto the discard pile or draws cards.
  5. Winning the Game:
    • The game continues until one player successfully plays all of their cards onto the discard pile.
    • The player who empties their hand first wins the game.

Differentiating Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game and takes the first turn, playing cards or drawing from the draw pile.
  • Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 follows after Player 1’s turn, taking subsequent turns in the same manner.

Summary: “Pushpin” is an entertaining and fast-paced 2 player card game where players strive to be the first to empty their hands by strategically playing cards onto the discard pile. Adapted for 2 players, the game offers engaging gameplay as players compete to play their cards efficiently. With simple rules and dynamic gameplay, “Pushpin” provides an enjoyable 2 player card game experience.
