Preference (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of the card game “Preference” is to win tricks by playing the highest-ranking cards or combinations of cards according to the rules of the game.

Adaptation for 2 Players: “Preference” is traditionally played with more players, but it can be adapted for two players by making some adjustments to the rules.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 32-card deck, consisting of cards from 7 to Ace in each suit.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal 10 cards to each player.
  3. Determine who will be the dealer for the first hand.

Scoring: In the 2 player version of “Preference,” scoring can be simplified:

  1. Winning Tricks:
    • Each player scores 1 point for each trick they win during the hand.
    • There is no scoring for card combinations like in the traditional version.
  2. Penalties:
    • If a player fails to win any tricks during a hand, they receive a penalty of 10 points.

Gameplay:

  1. Starting the Game:
    • The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand.
  2. Taking Turns:
    • Players take turns playing cards in a clockwise direction.
    • Each player must follow suit if possible; if not, they can play any card.
    • The player who plays the highest-ranking card of the leading suit wins the trick and leads the next one.
  3. Scoring Tricks:
    • After all 10 tricks have been played, count the number of tricks won by each player.
    • Each player scores 1 point for each trick they won.
    • If a player fails to win any tricks, they receive a penalty of 10 points.
  4. Dealing the Next Hand:
    • The player to the left of the current dealer becomes the new dealer for the next hand.
    • Shuffle the deck and deal 10 cards to each player again.

Differentiating Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game by leading the first trick and takes subsequent turns during the hand.
  • Player 2’s Turn: After Player 1’s turn, it becomes Player 2’s turn to play their cards.

Summary: “Preference” is a classic 2 player card game where players aim to win tricks by playing the highest-ranking cards. Adapted for 2 players, the game retains its strategic depth and competitive nature. With simplified scoring and straightforward gameplay, “Preference” offers an enjoyable experience for two players.
