Penny Poker (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of Penny Poker is to win the pot by having the best hand or by bluffing your opponent into folding.

Adaptation for 2 Players: Penny Poker is traditionally played with multiple players, but it can be adapted for 2 players by modifying the betting structure and dealing process.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Agree on the initial amount of pennies each player will start with.
  3. Determine the dealer for the first hand. The dealer can be chosen randomly or by any agreed-upon method.
  4. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals 5 cards to each player, one at a time, starting with the player to their left.

Scoring: In Penny Poker, the standard poker hand rankings are used for scoring. Here is a brief overview of the hand rankings from highest to lowest:

  1. Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit.
  2. Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
  3. Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
  4. Full House: Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
  5. Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.
  6. Straight: Five consecutive cards of mixed suits.
  7. Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
  8. Two Pair: Two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
  9. One Pair: Two cards of the same rank.
  10. High Card: The highest-ranking card in the hand if no other hand is made.

Gameplay:

  1. Betting Rounds:
    • Each hand consists of one or more betting rounds. The first round of betting begins with the player to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise.
    • Players can choose to bet, raise the bet, or fold their hand.
  2. Discarding and Drawing:
    • After the first round of betting, players have the opportunity to discard up to 3 cards from their hand and draw new ones from the deck.
    • The dealer distributes new cards to the players who chose to discard, starting with the player to their left.
  3. Final Betting Round:
    • After the drawing phase, another round of betting takes place, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
  4. Showdown:
    • If more than one player remains after the final betting round, a showdown occurs, and players reveal their hands.
    • The player with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot. If players have the same hand, the pot is split.
    • If one player folds during any betting round, the remaining player wins the pot without showing their hand.
  5. Dealer Rotation:
    • After each hand, the dealer position rotates clockwise to the next player.

Differentiating Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game as the dealer and takes the lead in dealing cards, initiating betting rounds, and making decisions throughout the game.
  • Player 2’s Turn: After Player 1 completes their turn as the dealer, it becomes Player 2’s turn to deal cards, lead betting rounds, and make decisions during the game.
