Five Hundred (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of Five Hundred is to be the first player or team to reach a predetermined score, usually 500 points.

Adaptation for 2 Players: In the 2 player version of Five Hundred, the game is adapted to suit only two players. The adaptation involves modifying the bidding and gameplay mechanics to accommodate the smaller player count.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard deck of 52 cards with jokers removed.
  2. Determine the dealer randomly.
  3. Shuffle the deck thoroughly and deal 10 cards to each player, one at a time, face down.

Scoring: Scoring in Five Hundred is based on the following:

  1. Tricks: Each trick won during the play phase is worth 10 points.
  2. Bidding: If the partnership achieves the contract bid, they score the number of points bid. If they fail to achieve the contract, they lose the number of points bid.
  3. Misere: If a player successfully takes no tricks during a Misere bid, they score 250 points. If they take any tricks, they lose 250 points.
  4. No Trump: If a player successfully takes no tricks during a No Trump bid, they score 500 points. If they take any tricks, they lose 500 points.

Gameplay:

  1. Bidding: Starting with the player to the dealer’s left and continuing clockwise, players bid on the number of tricks they think they can take during the play phase. Bidding starts at 6 and goes up to 10.
  2. Trick-Taking: The player who won the bid leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand. The other player must follow suit if possible. If not, they can play any card.
  3. The player who wins the trick leads the next one.
  4. Scoring: After all 10 tricks have been played, the partnership counts the number of tricks they’ve taken. If they meet or exceed their bid, they score points based on the contract. If they fail to meet their bid, they lose points.
  5. Winning the Game: The game continues until one player or partnership reaches 500 points. They are then declared the winner.

Differentiation between Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game and leads the first trick if they win the bidding.
  • Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 follows after Player 1’s turn, leading the first trick if they win the bidding.

Summary: Five Hundred is an exciting 2 player card game where players bid on the number of tricks they think they can take and try to reach 500 points first. This adaptation ensures that the game remains enjoyable and competitive with just two players.
