Five Card Cribbage (2 player card game)

Objective: The objective of Five Card Cribbage is to score points by forming combinations of cards and reaching the target score before your opponent.

Adaptation for 2 Players: In the 2 player version of Five Card Cribbage, the game is adapted to suit only two players. The adaptation involves modifying the gameplay mechanics and rules to accommodate the smaller player count.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard deck of 52 cards.
  2. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
  3. Each player is dealt 5 cards face down.
  4. Place the remaining cards face down in the center to form the draw pile. Turn the top card of the draw pile face up to start the discard pile.

Scoring: Scoring in Five Card Cribbage is based on various combinations of cards:

  1. Fifteens: Each combination of cards totaling 15 scores 2 points. For example, a 7 and an 8 together score 2 points.
  2. Pairs: A pair of cards of the same rank scores 2 points. Three of a kind scores 6 points.
  3. Runs: A sequence of three or more consecutive cards scores 1 point per card. For example, a sequence of 3, 4, and 5 scores 3 points.
  4. Flush: If all the cards in your hand are of the same suit, you score 4 points.
  5. Nobs: If you have a Jack of the same suit as the starter card, you score 1 point.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1 starts the game by selecting 2 cards from their hand and discarding them face down to the discard pile.
  2. Player 2 then picks up the discarded cards and adds them to their hand.
  3. Player 2 then selects 2 cards from their hand to discard, and Player 1 picks them up.
  4. This process continues until all cards have been discarded, leaving each player with a hand of 5 cards.
  5. Players then take turns laying down cards from their hand, trying to form combinations that score points.
  6. After all cards have been played, players tally their scores based on the combinations formed during the round.
  7. The player who reaches the target score first (usually 121 points) wins the game.

Differentiation between Turns:

  • Player 1’s Turn: Player 1 starts the game and takes the first turn, discarding cards to the discard pile.
  • Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 follows after Player 1’s turn, picking up the discarded cards and then discarding their own cards.

Summary: Five Card Cribbage is an engaging 2 player card game where players aim to score points by forming combinations of cards. This adaptation ensures that the game remains enjoyable and competitive with just two players.
