Cuts (2 player card game)

Objective: Cuts is a trick-taking game that originated in India. Typically played with 3 or more players, we’ll adapt it for 2 players. The goal is to win tricks and earn points based on the value of the cards captured.

Setup:

  1. Use a standard deck of 52 cards with jokers removed.
  2. Determine the first dealer. The dealer shuffles the deck, and the non-dealer cuts.
  3. Deal 13 cards to each player, one at a time, starting with the non-dealer. Place the remaining cards face-down in the center to form the draw pile.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn:

    • Player 1 starts by playing a card face-up onto the table.
    • Player 2 then plays a card face-up beside it.
    • The player who played the higher-ranking card wins the trick and captures both cards, placing them face-down in front of them.
  2. Scoring:

    • After all 13 tricks have been played, players count the total value of the cards they’ve captured.
    • Aces are worth 4 points, Kings, Queens, and Jacks are worth 3 points each, and all other cards are worth their face value.
    • The player with the highest total score wins the round and earns a point.
    • If a player captures all 13 tricks, they earn an additional bonus of 10 points.
    • The first player to reach a predetermined point goal, such as 21 or 31 points, wins the game.
  3. Adaptation for 2 Players:

    • In the 2-player adaptation, players take turns playing cards and competing to win tricks.
    • The player who wins a trick leads the next trick.
    • Players continue taking turns until all 13 tricks have been played.

Summary: Cuts, a trick-taking game from India, has been adapted for 2 players. Players take turns playing cards and competing to win tricks, earning points based on the value of the cards captured. Despite being originally designed for more players, Cuts offers an enjoyable 2 player card game experience.
