Cờ Tướng (2 player card game)

Objective: Cờ Tướng is a traditional strategy board game played between two players. The objective is to checkmate the opponent’s king, similar to chess. We will adapt the rules of Cờ Tướng for 2 players using a standard deck of cards.

Setup:

1. Remove all cards from the deck except for the numbered cards (2 through 10) and the face cards (Jack, Queen, King, Ace).
2. Designate one player as Player 1 and the other as Player 2.

Gameplay:

1. Setting Up the “Chessboard”:

   • Place the deck of cards face down between the players to serve as the “chessboard.”
   • Each player draws five cards from the deck to form their initial hand.

2. Player 1’s Turn:

   • Player 1 starts by selecting one of their cards and placing it face up on their side of the “chessboard.”
   • The card’s value determines the type of chess piece it represents:
     • Jack: Knight
     • Queen: Queen
     • King: King
     • Ace: Rook
     • Numbered cards: Pawn (moves forward only)
   • Each card’s suit indicates its color (red or black), representing the player’s pieces.
   • Player 1 then moves the chosen piece according to the rules of chess:
     • Knights move in an L-shape (two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular).
     • Queens move diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.
     • Kings move one square in any direction.
     • Rooks move horizontally or vertically.
     • Pawns move forward one square.

3. Player 2’s Turn:

   • Player 2 follows the same process as Player 1, selecting a card from their hand, placing it on their side of the “chessboard,” and making a legal move with the corresponding piece.

4. Capturing Pieces:

   • When a player’s piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent’s piece, the opponent’s piece is captured and removed from the “chessboard.”

5. Scoring:

   • The game continues until one player successfully checks the opponent’s king, capturing it with their own piece.
   • The player who checkmates the opponent’s king earns a point.
   • If the game ends in a stalemate, neither player scores a point.

Adaptation for 2 Players:

• In this adaptation, players take turns playing cards and moving pieces, emulating the gameplay of Cờ Tướng.
• The deck of cards serves as the “chessboard,” with players selecting cards from their hand to represent different chess pieces.
• The objective remains the same: to checkmate the opponent’s king.
