Chō-han (2 player card game)

Objective: Chō-han is a traditional Japanese dice game that involves guessing whether the sum of two dice will be odd (chō) or even (han). It can be adapted for two players. The objective is to correctly predict the outcome of each round.

Setup: Use a standard deck of 52 cards. Remove all face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) and jokers, leaving only the numbered cards. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn:

    • Player 1 starts by drawing a card from the deck.
    • They secretly look at the card and make a prediction: whether the next card drawn will have a value higher or lower than the card they just drew.
    • Player 1 places their prediction face down on the table.
  2. Player 2’s Turn:

    • Player 2 follows the same process as Player 1, drawing a card from the deck, making a prediction, and placing it face down.
  3. Reveal and Scoring:

    • After both players have made their predictions, they reveal their cards.
    • If Player 1 correctly predicted that the next card would be higher and it is indeed higher, they score a point. If it’s lower, Player 2 scores a point. If it’s the same value, it’s a draw, and no points are awarded.
    • The players then discard the drawn cards and proceed to the next round.
  4. End of Game:

    • The game continues for a predetermined number of rounds or until all cards have been drawn from the deck.
    • After the final round, players tally their points to determine the winner.

Adaptation for 2 Players:

  • In this adaptation, players take turns drawing cards and making predictions.
  • The game is played in a series of rounds, with each player having an equal opportunity to score points.
  • Since there are only two players, the game becomes a head-to-head competition of guessing and luck.

Scoring:

  • Players earn one point for each correct prediction.
  • The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Summary: Chō-han has been adapted into a 2 player card game where players take turns drawing cards and guessing whether the next card will be higher or lower than the previous one. By adjusting the rules and using a deck of cards instead of dice, Chō-han becomes an engaging 2 player experience.
