Burro (2 player card game)

Objective: Burro, also known as Donkey, is a fun and simple card game typically played with three or more players. However, it can be adapted for two players. The objective is to collect sets of matching cards and avoid being the last player to do so, as this results in receiving penalty points.

Setup: Use a standard deck of 52 cards. Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in the center of the table to form the draw pile.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn – Drawing Phase:

    • Player 1 starts their turn by drawing one card from the draw pile.
    • If the drawn card matches any cards in Player 1’s hand to form a set (e.g., a pair, three of a kind), they must immediately lay down the set face up on the table.
  2. Player 2’s Turn – Drawing Phase:

    • Player 2 follows the same process, drawing one card from the draw pile.
    • If Player 2 forms a set, they lay it down face up on the table.
  3. Discarding Phase:

    • After drawing, if either player has more than 7 cards in hand, they must discard one card face down into a discard pile.
  4. Player 1’s Turn – Passing Phase:

    • Player 1 can then choose to either draw a card from the draw pile or attempt to steal a set from Player 2.
    • To steal a set, Player 1 must have the exact card(s) needed to complete the set in their hand. They then lay down the matching cards and take the set from Player 2. If successful, Player 1 lays down the set face up on the table.
  5. Player 2’s Turn – Passing Phase:

    • Player 2 follows the same process, choosing to draw a card or attempt to steal a set from Player 1.
  6. Scoring:

    • The game continues until one player successfully gets rid of all their cards by forming sets.
    • The player who is left with cards in hand at the end of the game receives penalty points based on the number and value of the cards remaining. For example, face cards may count as 10 points each, and numbered cards count as their face value.
    • The game can be played over multiple rounds, and the player with the fewest penalty points at the end wins.

Summary: In this adaptation of Burro for 2 players, participants take turns drawing cards, forming sets, and attempting to avoid being left with cards in hand. By modifying the rules and gameplay dynamics, Burro becomes an enjoyable 2 player card game experience.
