Authors (2 player card game)

Objective: Authors is a classic card game where players collect sets of matching cards by asking opponents for specific cards. Typically played with more players, Authors can be adapted for two players.

Setup: A standard deck of 52 cards is used. Remove all the Jokers. Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player.

Gameplay:

1. Starting Player: Player 1 starts the game.

2. Asking for Cards: Player 1 begins by asking Player 2 if they have a specific card rank (e.g., “Do you have any Queens?”). If Player 2 has the requested card, they must give it to Player 1. If not, Player 1 draws a card from the stock.

3. Creating Sets: If Player 1 collects all four cards of a rank, they place the set face up in front of them.

4. Player 2’s Turn: Player 2 then asks Player 1 for a specific card rank. The same rules apply: if Player 1 has the requested card, they must give it to Player 2, otherwise, Player 2 draws a card from the stock.

5. Scoring: Points are awarded based on the sets of cards collected:

   • Single Book: If a player collects all four cards of a rank, they score 1 point for each set.
   • Double Book: If a player collects both sets of a rank (e.g., all four Queens and all four Kings), they score 2 points for each set.
   • Game Variation: Alternatively, you can set a predetermined number of points to win the game.

6. Drawing Cards: If the stock runs out, shuffle the discard pile to create a new stock.

7. End of Game: The game continues until all cards are collected, or until a predetermined number of points is reached.
