Calabresella Chiusa (2 player card game)

Objective: Calabresella Chiusa is a variant of the Italian card game Calabresella, typically played with three or more players. However, it can be adapted for two players. The objective is to score points by capturing valuable cards in tricks and fulfilling specific objectives.

Setup: Use a standard deck of 40 cards (without 8s, 9s, and 10s). Shuffle the deck and deal 10 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face-down to form the draw pile.

Gameplay:

  1. Player 1’s Turn – Auction Phase:

    • Player 1 starts by making an opening bid, indicating the number of points they aim to score during the hand and specifying any particular objectives they intend to achieve.
    • The bidding proceeds clockwise, and each player has the option to either bid higher, pass, or challenge the previous bid.
  2. Player 2’s Turn – Auction Phase:

    • Player 2 responds to Player 1’s bid by either matching the bid, raising it, or passing.
  3. Trick-taking Phase:

    • Once the bidding phase is resolved, the player who won the auction leads the first trick by playing a card face-up.
    • The opponent follows suit by playing a card of the same suit if possible. If not, they can play any card.
    • The player who played the highest-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next trick.
  4. Scoring:

    • Points are awarded based on the cards won in tricks:
      • Aces: 11 points each
      • Tens: 10 points each
      • Kings: 4 points each
      • Queens: 3 points each
      • Jacks: 2 points each
    • Additionally, points may be awarded for fulfilling specific objectives outlined during the auction phase, such as capturing specific cards or achieving certain combinations.
  5. End of Round:

    • The game continues until all 10 tricks have been played.
    • After the final trick, players count the points in their tricks and tally their scores based on the bidding contract, the cards captured, and any fulfilled objectives.
    • The player who reaches the predetermined target score first wins the game.

Summary: In this adaptation of Calabresella Chiusa for 2 players, participants take turns bidding, playing tricks, and scoring points based on the cards captured and objectives achieved. By modifying the rules and gameplay dynamics, Calabresella Chiusa becomes an engaging 2 player card game experience.
