Booray (2 player card game)

Objective: Booray, also known as Bourré or Boo-Ray, is a trick-taking card game typically played with four or more players. However, it can be adapted for two players. The objective is to win tricks containing valuable cards and avoid being the last player to take a trick, as this results in a penalty.

Setup: Use a standard deck of 52 cards. Shuffle the deck and deal 9 cards to each player. The remaining cards form the draw pile.

Gameplay:

1. Player 1’s Turn – Betting Phase: Player 1 starts by placing a bet into the pot. This can be any amount they choose, or they can choose to pass if they don’t want to bet.

2. Player 2’s Turn – Betting Phase: Player 2 then has the option to either match the bet made by Player 1, raise the bet, or fold and forfeit the round.

3. Card Exchange: After the betting phase, each player has the option to discard and replace up to 3 cards from their hand with cards from the draw pile.

4. Player 1’s Turn – Trick-taking Phase: Player 1 leads the first trick by playing a card face up in the center of the table. Player 2 then follows suit if possible, playing a card of the same suit. If not, they can play any card.

5. Player 2’s Turn – Trick-taking Phase: Player 2 leads the next trick, and the process repeats until all 9 tricks have been played.

6. Scoring: Points are awarded based on the cards won in tricks and the outcome of the round:

   • High Card: The player who wins the most tricks scores 1 point.
   • Low Card: The player who wins the fewest tricks is considered the “Booray” and receives a penalty of 1 point for each trick won by their opponent.
   • Total Points: The total points scored by each player are calculated at the end of the round.

7. End of Round: The round ends when all 9 tricks have been played, and the points are tallied. Players can then decide to continue playing additional rounds or stop.
